Baby Gender Reveal Cupcake Tutorial

My husband and I recently found out that we are expecting our second child! With our first we didn’t really do anything creative with the gender reveal so we definitely wanted to do something special this time around! We decided to do the reveal through cupcakes! Below you will see the complete tutorial on creating the perfect gender specific cupcakes for your ideal gender reveal party/get-together! Enjoy!

First off, find out the gender of your new baby! I was blessed enough to find out at about 12 weeks through a blood test. Many don’t find out until the anatomy ultrasound which typically occurs around week 20.

Once we found out we were having another boy I went to the store to buy all the supplies. Many you will have in your kitchen already.

You will need:

  • A homemade cake recipe (chocolate, vanilla, etc…anything will work) OR a pre-measued cake from the box (definitely a lot easier)
  • Homemade icing ingredients OR a can of vanilla/white icing
  • Pink or Blue food coloring
  • An apple corer
  • Cupcake pan and cupcake liners

1.Follow your instructions for baking your cupcakes, whether from scratch or from the box.

2. Once the cupcakes are cooked and cooled, use the apple corer to remover a small amount of cake from the center of each cake. Make sure you don’t go all the way to the bottom of the cupcake…you want to leave some cake at the bottom so no frosting leaks out.

3. Set those aside and move to your frosting. Take about half of your homemade frosting or caned frosting and place it in a bowl. Add either pink or blue frosting depending on your babies gender. Mix this into the frosting until the color is well blended. I like the color to be a light pastel…mine came out a little darker than planned.

4. Once you have your colored frosting place that into a piping bag or if you don’t have a piping bag, just use a plastic bag and snip one of the corners.

5. Start filling the center of your cupcakes with the colored icing. Make sure not to get the colored icing anywhere else on the cupcake or it won’t be a surprise to everyone!

6. Once all of your cupcakes are filled grab the leftover white icing. Place this icing in another piping bag or a plastic bag and snip one of the corners. Start icing the tops of the cupcakes starting from the outer rim and finishing in the center. I like to do a nice thick layer of icing just to make sure you can’t see the colored icing in the middle.

7. And you’re finished! I had all of my guests take one cupcake and bite into them all at once! It’s such a great surprise for everyone! Enjoy!!
