DIY: Birthday Cake Smash Outfit

By on September 5, 2013

Today I will be doing a birthday cake smash outfit tutorial!

My son will soon be turning 1 and I’ll be doing a cake smash photo shoot and have him wear this cute little outfit! I checked out websites that made these outfits (mostly on and I found that A.) they were kind of pricey, and B.) they didn’t have exactly what I had in mind. So I took the challenge and researched how to sew this outfit myself. Below you will find tutorials for the birthday hat, neck tie, shorts, and suspenders. Just choose your favorite fabric and get to sewing. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Baby birthday hat: I printed this pattern, sewed fabric and my ribbon detail on it and then connected the pieces together in the back. I also used elastic for the chin strap instead of ribbon. I thought the elastic would hold the hat on my son’s head a little better than the ribbon.

Baby neck tie: This was my favorite to sew! It was so easy and it really turned out cute! I followed this tutorial exactly.

Baby shorts. This was also a great tutorial. Very well explained. The tutorial is for an 18 month old so when I printed the pattern I just adjusted the scale to 95% instead of 100%. You can do this in your printer settings right before you click print. My son wears 12-18 month clothes and it fit him perfectly. So you may have to adjust appropriately.

Baby suspenders: For my son’s suspenders I actually just used 1″ elastic and 4 suspender clips. I measured my son from the front of his shorts, over his shoulder, to the back of his shorts. Once I had this measurement I cut my elastic with about 1″ less on each strap. This way the elastic will be stretched and won’t fall off the shoulder. I sewed the suspender clips on all 4 ends of the elastic and then attached the two straps by criss-crossing them in the back and sewing a triangle to hold it. There you go!

Have fun!!

Here are a few photos from my son’s cake smash photo shoot! So adorable, right!!??

LOVE your pattern! I’m attempting to make this cake smash outfit for my grandson and can’t open the necktie tutorial or pattern. Could you please send it to me? Thank you.
