Having a Doula for my birth: Yes or No?

By on January 22, 2013

As if there aren’t things to think about when your expecting, here’s one more. Is hiring a doula for my childs birth right for me? Here’s the rundown and my personal story:

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the word Doula is a “Greek word meaning women’s servant. Women have been serving other women in childbirth for many centuries and have proven that support from another woman has a positive impact on the labor process.”*

Many women debate over whether they truly need a doula to assist them during childbirth. I was one of those women. When I first got pregnant I hadn’t even heard of a doula. One of my close friends recommended that I look into getting one. I was a little tentative at first because I didn’t know anything about doula services and I also didn’t want some random person attending my birth. Once I looked into it I was definite that I wanted hire a doula for my sons birth. I began the search. I wanted just the right person…one who knew a lot about childbearing and probably most important, a woman that got along with my husband and I. Per me friends suggestion, I contacted her doula from her most recent birth. I loved her right away! We met several times before my sons birth. She explained pretty much everything to us…the entire birthing process, which was good because this was our first child and we really didn’t know much about birth. She was available for us if we had any questions and she explained things to us that my doctor was saying (it can be a little overwhelming on your first time around!) She prepped us for the entire process. From different techniques for speeding up labor to baby care, she covered it all! She even had us create a birth plan to take with us to the hospital. When it finally came to my birth, she was right there with me the entire time.

Besides my husband (of course!) my doula was the most significant help during childbirth (she could have probably delivered the baby!). I can honestly say that I probably wouldn’t have had such a great birth experience had my doula not been there. She really made my husband and I feel at peace about the whole process. It can be really scary going into childbirth for the first time…not knowing what to expect. She was so intelligent about everything and such and encouraging person.

I will definitely be hiring a doula at every other birth of mine. It was such a relief to have someone there who knew so much about childbirth. The doctors are there, but only for a short while. This is someone who will also be your advocate in the hospital. Sometimes nurses and doctors can pressure you into doing something that you really don’t need to do…just to speed things up or to make it more convenient for them. A doula is there for you and you only! If you’re thinking about cost, doulas range from around $200 to about $1,500, depending on their training and experience. Some insurance plans actually pay for doula services. All the better!

I would 100% recommend anyone preparing to give birth to consider hiring a doula. At least do some research!
